Riley Dale Ovenshire recently graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids in a class of 290. Riley will be a student at ISU this fall. He will be honored at a picnic at Spring Lake State Park on July 11 from 2-? for family and friends. Save the date.
Guests in the home of Doris Brown last week included her cousin, Don and Karen Drake of Gilbert, AZ. They had arrived for the weekend to attend a wedding in Des Moines before leaving for Gilbert on Monday afternoon. Also, her niece and husband, Barb and Gary Case of Cardington, OH, were visiting for a few days and Gary installed a new railing along the steps for Doris. He especially liked helping Ron by hauling hay bales from the field to the barn during an afternoon of baling hay. All enjoyed visiting with Doris and other family members while in Iowa.
Dale and Nancy Hanaman attended a Des Moines Menace women’s soccer game at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. Their niece Lyndsey Bywater is a forward on the Des Moines team.
Jean Borgeson enjoyed a two week vacation with her sister and husband, Elayne and Dean Bice of Johnston. The first few days were spent at Fort Collins, CO, where other family members had gathered to enjoy some time with their brother, Wayne Darling and his wife Heid, from Innermanzing, Austria. Wayne was there because of his involvement with the International Society of Bassists. He is a recently retired professor emeritus of double bass at the University School of Music in Graz, Austria. As a longtime member of the ISB and director of the Bass Encounters events in Graz and Vienna, Wayne is an active supporter of double bass meetings, workshops and competitions, and has given clinics and workshops for the Jamey Aebersold Camps and others around the world.
On Thursday evening he presented “Music from Wayne’s Brains and Other Encounters” which included some of his own jazz compositions. A highlight was an original song, “Sparkling Tyrone” in honor of our mother, whose heart throb of her youth was Tyrone Power.
Wayne took the time to give his two grandnieces Anna and Maggie a private bass lesson and tips. The girls have recently taken up the bass at their schools in Johnston and Ankeny. We all were able to sit in on an instructional session, which included two teenage boys and a 70-year-old who were there to get instruction. A drummer and piano player are usually included in these sessions, and brother Floyd was invited to play the piano. What a thrill for all of us to hear the two brothers playing together again after so many years.
Some of the family took day trips to Estes Park and other points of interest during the week. The evenings were spent at the hotel eating and generally laughing until our sides hurt. The four Darling siblings haven’t been together since 2003 when our mother died and then not long enough to enjoy that visit. This time, visiting over a period of time in a more relaxed setting was something none of us will ever forget, especially the youngest in the group who enjoyed the family stories.
Others who came were Floyd Darling and his daughter Sarah from Montgomery, TX; Wayne’s daughter Lara Lissick of Inver Grove Heights, MN; Chris Bice and his daughter Maggie, of Ankeny; Dena (Bice) Losen and her daughter Anna of Urbandale; and Linda (Borgeson) Hampton of Chandler, AZ.
After leaving Fort Collins, Dean, Elayne and Jean took a side trip through Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon, driving on to Chandler where two nights were spent enjoying the Hampton family. They arrived home Saturday afternoon very thankful for the trip and family time, but road weary and tired of living out of a suitcase.

During the Sunday, June 14, service the following persons were recognized for completing the Disciple IV Bible study: Angela Abbas, Jo Bardole, Richard Bardole, Nancy Burrow, Dale Hanaman, Nancy Hanaman, Mary Liebich and Richard Liebich. This was a year-long study of Old Testament scriptures and the Book of Revelation led by Pastor Paul Burrow. Roy Bardole was also recognized for being named the Bell Tower Hall of Fame honoree for 2015 for his work on a national and international basis to promote the production and marketing of soybeans. A special thank you to all who shared in the ice cream social on June 7 and helped to make it a success.
